Galatians Study: Chapter 3-Justification by Faith

 Galatian Chapter 3

-we do not receive the Holy Spirit by works of the law but by hearing-it takes faith

-we do not suffer in vain

-He supplies the Spirit to us

-Be just as Abraham who believed

-we are the sons/daughters of Abraham’s faith

-Gentiles by faith will be justified too-Promise not just to the Jews but all mankind

-law brings a curse

-law is not faith

Galatians 3: 11-12

“Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”

-Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law

-Jesus Christ reaches all men

-Jesus Christ is the promise of the Spirit through faith

VS. 15

-Promises made

-Abraham seed = promise made

-Seed = Jesus Christ 430 years later confirmed by the covenant

Galatians 3: 19

“Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come.”

-the law is the tutor to bring us to Christ

-Christ became our mediator

-scripture has confirmed all under sin; promise by faith in Jesus Christ

-but after Christ, we no longer needed to tutored or become the tutor

***Christ alone is the cornerstone

Galatians 3: 26-29

“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

***we are the heirs of God’s kingdom through faith in Christ

***we are heirs of the promise given to Abraham’s seed

Galatians Study: Chapter 2-Defending the Gospel

 Galatians: Chapter 2

Paul: reminds the church who he was before Jesus and after in relationship with Jesus

-False gospel is works based salvation

-Purpose of church: build the ministry, show mercy/kindness/love, face persecution together, confront evil, bring Jesus into the public square

***relationships between Paul, apostles, and disciples imperfect, but hold each other accountable to keep within Jesus’ gospel and not stray to man’s laws

“But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!” (Galatians 2:17).

-not justified by works or by the law

-justified by by belief in Christ through faith

- it is a simple act of belief through grace you are saved

Reminders:

-Jesus ate with sinners

-Jesus was of no sin

-Jesus said you can’t build again what I have destroyed (any other way to Christ-Jesus is the only way)

VS. 19

-law is not the way to life

-law is way to death

-law not intended to save

-law shows us we need a savior

-we need the 10 commandments, nothing wrong with laws as it reflects God’s character

“Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (John 12:24).

-Christ lives in me by faith

-Christ removes living a life in the flesh

-we are ambassadors of Christ

-He loved me so much He gave His life for me

VS. 21

-don’t set aside the grace of God

-Jesus didn’t die in vain

-Jesus secured our salvation

Galatians Study: Chapter 1-The truth of the gospel of grace is under attack

Galatians: Chapter 1

-truth of gospel of grace was under attack

-Paul has a sense of urgency as there was a crisis within the church

-referred to as the “fighting epistle”

-Paul defends and contends for faith against the diluted gospel of grace

-Paul gives to directives to live in freedom in Christ and not be bound to bondage

Galatians 1: 4

“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,  who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,  to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Authority given to apostles-

“built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone” (Ephesians 2:20).

-Paul’s purpose was to speak to church falling away from grace so he reminds the church of what grace did for us

Galatians 1:6

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ

-Paul warns the church that we do not co-exist with evil as the darkness distorts and perverts the gospel of Christ

Galatians 1:10

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

-Paul: Do not add to the gospel

-Paul: address false preachers/teachers

-Paul: Do not teach convoluted or diluted or add to the gospel

***Liberty = all you can do in the name of Jesus is restrained freedom from the worldview

Reminder: Paul was transformed from accuser of Jesus to being called by Jesus through grace. He experienced salvation:

“As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do” (Acts 9: 3-6_

Paul: after transformation, evangelized in his hometown for 7 years

Paul: preached the faith of redemption, the faith he had once tried to destroy
