Shingles Demand Letter

Below is the letter I wrote and sent to the contacts listed below to fight for the option of the population under age 50 to obtain the shingles shot. If you want to also send the letter click on the links and also forward to anyone you think will also send demand letter. Let's make a movement :)

Done: Board of Pharmacy: contact, send communication for that state ex. Nevada https://bop.nv.gov/contact/Contact_Us/

To Healthcare Representative:

There is a population under age 50 that has been undervalued by the CDC, FDA, State Board of Pharmacy, and Coalitions by not acknowledging the effects on the quality of life by an outbreak of shingles (Varicella Zoster Virus). As other virus, like Covid-19, is being quickly addressed and recommended to people as young as 12 years old. Making the Shingrix vaccination available to people under the age of 50 who have had Chicken Pox can also be prevented. Or if a person under age 50 has had shingles should be able to get the Shingrix vaccine to help build anti-bodies as this population should be considered as vulnerable and are listed under the CDC and FDA as “Special Populations” where shingles does attack the body multiple times with the onset of the first outbreak.

CDC states “any person born before 1980 can develop shingles.” This statement justifies a change in the rule that only people 50 and older can receive the shingles shot even with a doctor’s note. Pharmacies are denying the preventive care.

“National Shingles Foundation reports that nearly one million individuals develop shingles in the U.S. each year”

“National Shingles Foundation are unsure what triggers the reemergence of the varicella-zoster.” Those over 50 mentioned that they has weakened immune system, so more likely to develop shingles. This should apply to the population under 50 as the number of outbreaks of shingles is increasing.

Immunization Action Coalition on vaccineinformation.org stats reveals: “How effective is the Shingrix vaccine? In clinical trials Shingrix reduced the occurrence of shingles by 97% among people 50 years and older. “Do zoster vaccines prevent post-herpetic neuralgia? Both Zostavax and Shingrix were shown to reduce the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Zostavax reduced the overall occurrence of PHN by 66%, whereas Shingrix reduced the overall occurrence of PHN by 89%.

CDC, 2017, “The CDC analysis was conducted from a societal perspective over a lifetime. It estimated that vaccination with RZV, compared with no vaccination, cost $31,000 per quality adjusted life year (QALY), on average, for immunocompetent adults aged ≥50 years.”

CDC, 2017, “post-herpetic neuralgia, commonly defined as persistent pain for at least 90 days following the resolution of the herpes zoster rash, is the most common complication and occurs in 10%–13% of herpes zoster cases in persons aged >50 years (3,4).”

CDC, 2018, Special Populations

“Persons with a history of herpes zoster. Herpes zoster can recur. Adults with a history of herpes zoster should receive RZV. If a patient is experiencing an episode of herpes zoster, vaccination should be delayed until the acute stage of the illness is over and symptoms abate. Studies of safety and immunogenicity of RZV in this population are ongoing.”

CDC, July 2020, “Zoster is caused by reactivation of latent zoster virus infection from a prior chickenpox infection. People who have had a prior infection with varicella zoster virus (chickenpox) are at risk of shingles.”

CDC, July 2020, “Special Situations: immunocompromising conditions-apply to those who had a shingles outbreak under age 50 and should be available *recommended use of RZV under review.”

FDA, 2017, On October 20, 2017, Zoster Vaccine Recombinant, Adjuvanted (Shingrix, GlaxoSmithKline, [GSK] Research Triangle Park, North Carolina), a 2-dose, subunit vaccine containing recombinant glycoprotein E in combination with a novel adjuvant (AS01B), was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of herpes zoster in adults aged ≥50 years. The vaccine consists of 2 doses (0.5 mL each), administered intramuscularly, 2–6 months apart (1). On October 25, 2017, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) for use in immunocompetent adults aged ≥50 years.

1 out of 5 people will be affected by shingles virus which will result in Posttherpetic Neuralgia (PHN). PHN is chronic nerve pain caused by the shingles virus that damages the nerve pathways. The severe pain can continue for months, or even years. This long-lasting pain can be so bad that it interferes with eating and sleeping. Some people with severe pain from shingles have even committed suicide. Although some medicines can help treat shingles, there is not cures.

I implore that the CDC and FDA, as they already have acknowledged the importance of preventive care, so reality is that the under 50 population is at risk so should have access to the Shingles vaccine. The other under 50 population who have already experienced Shingles and PHN is at risk of another outbreak so should have access to the Shingles vaccine.

There is a large sense of loss today

There is a large sense of loss today. Headlines seem to focus on just promoting more division between people. That is a sad loss because I truly believe there are more people in this world that care for others more than the hatred that is being pushed by media. It is difficult to watch all the loss and the impact it has had on lives and livelihoods. I have talked with disappointed and struggling families that just see no hope, kids who feel their life is pointless, and a whole lot of anger between family members. The balance of keeping my faith to myself but offer counseling that give families answers to their pain can be overwhelming because I feel for these families. Fear is still a stronghold that limits students’ options to take a job, take a state test, be in a classroom, or just a walk outdoors. Parents love their kids and want to keep them safe, but it can smother the life out of kids who need more than just an online communication. I get a lot of “I miss” or “I wish I could” or “I’m so isolated.” When do families get back to living when they are constantly told if they leave their homes death is the only outcome. “Getting back to normal” has become a hardship. It is frustrating when I feel helpless to walk families back from a brink I don’t fully understand. I thought about keeping my own son safe when this pandemic was in full lock down, but I had to live out my own faith by letting him keep working through out this past year. I found that going into the building to work was a sense of relief and freedom. That is not true for many people and that is a sad sense of loss.

Our pastor has done a series on how we fight our battles and I thought about it is true for the whole human race. Each of us can choose to run, hide out, or be bold enough to enter the battles we encounter in our lives. When I think of a battle I envision it being physical, but today I see it being a spiritual one. I know that I need to be around a community of faith. The Theology classes I am taking really ignites that passion for his word as it replenishes my soul. I need it as I encounter desperate needs of families I haven’t seen before. I feel for these young people who may carry around the junk of the past year around them into their future’s for a very long time. My prayer is that they don’t drag all those negative emotions around with them as it kills their spirit. A lot of animosity and rejection happening all around us. Masks not just covering up our faces but masking a fake “I am fine.”
A story that stuck out to me recently was from an elderly person who stated “I don’t live by the headlines, but I write my own headlines.” He meant that each day he finds one moment that is his stand out moment of the day. It could be big or it could be small like “Man brings groceries to elderly neighbor” or “Man talked to a teenager about the beautiful weather.” Wouldn’t it be nice to read more and more kind stories and connections we have missed out in the past year? The challenge was to take one moment in your day and that is your headline of the day. Can you imagine how impacting it would be to reflect on 365 make your own headline year. I am going to try this myself staring April 1st. Let’s see how it goes and how much God can impact us and others around us each day. Today here is my practice headline:
Tanya responds to her Theology class discussion question about the reason the Gospel of John is so important; she shares it so others will be comforted and believe:
The Gospel of John is not included in the synoptic gospels because the perspective is different. They focused on God's kingdom, but John's doesn't mention his kingdom, but focuses on Jesus being the way to eternal life. John was a historian and theologian who brought the story of Jesus to his readers so they would not see his death on the cross as a tragedy, but a place of glory where new life flows to everyone who believes in him. He wanted his audience to elicit belief that Jesus is the son of God who came to live, die and his resurrection paid the price for sin so whoever believes in him will receive the gift of eternal life. This is the foundation of the Christian faith. John 3:16 is a key verse as it states “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The vantage point of Jesus shifts because John is part of the inner circle of Jesus so his gospel is intimate as he saw himself through the eyes of Jesus. As Christians, when we believe we do the same. We see Jesus as a sacrifice who came to save not only our soul, but the whole world. John was named "the disciple whom Jesus loved" because of his transformation from being arrogant to humble. When we read the Gospel of John we can see his transformation just as we see the transformation in ourselves when we gain that intimate relationship with Jesus.
My prayer is that families can move forward and not stay in the past of confinement. I pray that healing will happen and the burden of life will be lightened and burdens removed to give space for people to grow and encourage each other. Just to be a kinder with each other and through in a little bit of patience. May opportunities open to gather and appreciate time together. May the fears we have not hinder our lives. May the hope we have in each other reflect that what we know of Jesus this week and just be thankful for all he did on the cross for us all.
Heard a new song this week by Ryan Stevenson call “When We Fall Apart” which is about losing a loved one and missing that person that it takes your breath away. A lot of loss out there so hope this song allows you let go and just feel:
Sometimes the only way to heal a broken heart
Is when we fall apart
God Bless you everyday,

I listen to a lot of books by many different authors, but the one I am listening to now starts off with the author explaining himself as an agnostic and then how his views changed. He then goes into explaining his friend who was an atheist. Never really thought about understanding those points-of-view before, but he made a very intriguing revelation for me which was that progressives have a mindset that if they destroy America at its religious foundation then they can save humankind and bring about a globalist utopia. This battle outcome is an illusion. In the end, Jesus wins. We just need to stay informed and aware of the changes that are being pushed. I know people don’t like to talk about politics, but if we are not talking then how are believers going to be ready for a movement we have never seen and how it will affect our America. The church should not put their faith in politics, but make sure that their faith is reflected in the politics making decisions for Americans. If interested you can too read/listen to Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America by David Horowitz.

Some things to think about:

1. Constitution: “The Capitol incident gave the left all the excuse they needed to label every one of us (right-wing, republican, conservative) a “domestic terrorist” and start taking our rights away. Look at what is happening with 1st amendment-What does cancel culture really mean? What does it mean to “reign in” certain media outlets? What speech will be reigned in? Also look for what defines a “Truth Commission” or a “Reality Czar or “Regulate disinformation.”

2. Elections: Democrats in Congress are rushing to push through a radical new bill that would give Congress ultimate authority over all future elections, known as H.R.1 (prevent voter suppression?)-mandating online voter registration not voter identification-voter harvesting easier-convicted felons right to vote-statehood of Washington DC-16 year-olds right to vote-non-citizens legal to vote-bans use of voter ID so can vote as many times as they want-at multiple sites-as whoever they want-can’t object to as poll watchers-unconstitutional-gives Congress has power over federal elections.

3. Education: Critical Race Theory-teaches kids what to think not how to think-Deconstruct identities-rewrite history-apply blame to kids of misdeeds of founding fathers-anti-racism sounds great, but polarize kids by race like all whites are privileged and minorities are all victims-judge people based on race identity-(White fragility is a book-look insidewhitefagility on youtube)

4. Military: white nationalism as a bigger national security threat domestic terror groups affiliated with Islam, for instance-right-wing extremist beliefs. Define this term and who will it vet out? Which soldiers need critical examination?

"Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position." 2 Peter 3: 17

“Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you” Revelation 3:3

I can admit that I have been apathetic, but just seems so much is happening so fast that it is hard to keep up and the consequences to our future. My prayer is that people of faith stay informed and be active in that faith. We should articulate our position and not be afraid to speak up. Prayers for healing in hearts who are in this constant state of unknown and how it impacts you and your family. Know you are important and are being prayed for each day.
